Things to do in Cape Town South Africa with film destination wedding photographer Renee Hollingshead. Boulders Beach, Penguin Beach in Simons Town

Boulders Beach in Cape Town

Travel

Come with us to explore Boulders Beach in Cape Town. It’s one of the most magical stops on the Cape Peninsula, and honestly, one of the highlights of our entire South Africa trip.

Located in Simons Town, Boulders Beach sits about 40 minutes south of Cape Town. A tucked-away cove sheltered by massive granite rocks, it’s home to a thriving colony of African penguins. Yes, wild penguins. Living their best lives on the beach. It’s as surreal and wonderful as it sounds. And honestly, freezing.

Getting There

If you’re planning a South Africa honeymoon, this is a non-negotiable day trip. Similarly, if you’re adding extra days around a destination wedding in Cape Town, put this at the top of your list. Rent a car and take the scenic M3 along the coastline — the drive alone is worth it. You’ll pass through Fish Hoek and charming Simons Town before you arrive. There’s a small SANParks entry fee, and it’s absolutely worth every rand.

What to Expect

The penguins roam freely along the boardwalks and sandy paths, completely unbothered by visitors. As a result, you can get surprisingly close. We spent nearly two hours just watching them waddle, swim, and sun themselves on the rocks. Bring a longer focal length for portraits — they’ll get closer than you expect. Meanwhile, a wide-angle lens is perfect for capturing the dramatic boulders and turquoise water behind them.

The light in the late afternoon is chef’s kiss. If you’re shooting film, bring extra rolls. You will burn through them fast.

For Couples Visiting Cape Town

If you’re honeymooning in South Africa or planning a Cape Town destination wedding, build Boulders Beach into your itinerary. Pair it with a morning at the Cape of Good Hope, or a wine tasting in Constantia — and you’ve got a perfect full day on the Peninsula. The whole region feels cinematic. Every turn is a frame worth keeping.

South Africa holds such a special place in my heart. Furthermore, Boulders Beach is exactly the kind of place that reminds you why travel is worth every bit of effort it takes to get there.

Enjoy!
