My Johannesburg travel guide has been a long time coming. Joburg is one of those cities that gets into your soul — and as someone who has now explored multiple corners of Africa, I can tell you with full confidence that this city is not to be skipped. It is vibrant, creative, deeply layered, and the food scene alone is worth the flight.
If you’ve been following along, you already know we have a love affair with this country. We’ve wandered through Cape Town, spotted penguins at Boulders Beach, and even had a beautiful anniversary session right here in Johannesburg a few years back. This part of the trip, though, felt different — fuller somehow. We were unapologetic foodies, we chased wildlife at sunrise, we shopped and celebrated and danced to good music. It was everything.
We spent a full day at Pilanesberg National Park for our safari, and if there’s one thing I want you to hear — it’s that you absolutely must do this. Set inside an ancient volcanic crater about two hours from the city, Pilanesberg is Big Five country. We spotted elephants, rhinos, zebras, and giraffes all moving freely through the landscape, and there were moments that genuinely stopped us in our tracks. It’s humbling in the most beautiful way. We used Pilanesberg Safaris for our private guided tour, and I can’t recommend them enough.
Back in the city, we found ourselves completely swept up by the Maboneng Precinct — Johannesburg’s iconic arts and culture district. Murals everywhere, galleries, independent shops, street food, and an energy that feels both electric and effortlessly cool. It’s the kind of neighborhood you wander through slowly, because something new catches your eye at every turn. Explore it for yourself here.
It was also in Maboneng that we did something so personally special — an anniversary session with the incredible Tanzanian blogger Aisha of Aisha and Life (@aishaandlife). She is warm, talented, and made the whole experience feel so celebratory against the most stunning backdrop. If you’re visiting Joburg and looking for a creative collaboration or portrait session, she is absolutely your person.
Now, let’s talk about Neighbourgoods Market — because this deserves its own moment. It was Aisha and Kev’s recommendation, and we will forever be in their debt for it. The music, the energy, the food coming at you from every direction — it was such a vibe. Artisan everything, global flavors, live music weaving through the crowd. We stayed far longer than planned and didn’t regret a single minute. Find out more here.
If South Africa is on your travel list — and it absolutely should be — don’t sleep on Johannesburg. Pair it with Cape Town for the full experience, and prepare for a trip that stays with you long after you’re home.
Enjoy!
